Community Story Circle @ Red Poppy
Thursday, May 16, 5:30-8:30pm
This Story Circles workshop, facilitated by Andrea Assaf, is part of a series inviting Southwest/Central Asian and North African (SWANA), Middle Eastern/North African/South Asian (MENASA), and Muslim American artists, BIPOC artists and allies, and impacted communities in the Bay Area to participate in workshops, creative writing, and theatre-making in response to the question: What has the impact of the post-9/11 era been in your city, and how does it connect to what’s happening today in Palestine?
This FREE workshop is offered in conjunction with a new project, 11Reflections: San Francisco, devised and directed by Andrea Assaf, featuring Syrian vocalist Lubana Al Quntar and Turkish violinist Eylem Basaldi, premiering October 4-5, 2024 at Brava Theatre. This project is the second in a new national series of performance works, Eleven Reflections on the Nation. In each participating city, the project engages local artists and community members who have been affected by post-9/11 policies to contribute their stories, illuminating our collective experiences since 2001—from the fall of the Twin Towers, to the U.S. wars on Iraq and Afghanistan, to the Muslim Ban, to the funding of genocide in Palestine.
11Reflections: San Francisco is co-produced by Golden Thread Productions, BRAVA! for Women in the Arts, and Art2Action, in collaboration with Aviva Arts and Red Poppy Art House.

About Red Poppy Art House
The Red Poppy Art House (“The Poppy”) was founded in 2003 to serve as an intercultural and multidisciplinary “space of encounter,” a hub where multiple social-cultural groups could interconnect to experience one another and therefore potentiate one another’s endeavors while weaving a more solid and tolerant social fabric. The Poppy is an artist-driven organization that seeks to empower and transform society by addressing current social issues that impact our community and society at large through creative processes.
Operating from a neighborhood storefront in San Francisco’s Mission District, RPAH demonstrates the unique, powerful, and irreplaceable capacity of intimate community spaces through hosting over 150 diverse performances, exhibitions, workshops, and artist residencies annually. Acting as an incubator for artists of multiple disciplines, RPAH provide a fertile, informal space for gathering, discussion, and artistic cross-pollination, out of which myriad collaborations form. The intent of Red Poppy Art House is to forge a bridge between high-caliber artistic work and community life through visibility and inclusiveness.
